“At a German cemetery, we found the graves of six American prisoners of war who had died during a forced march. From their heavy winter clothes, we assumed they had been taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive. As we were disinterring the POW’s bodies, I spoke with an old German caretaker who casually mentioned that when the men were brought to the cemetery, five were dead and one dying–a scene difficult to imagine. We had exhumed three bodies and checked for dog tags, but found none. Finally when disinterring the fourth man, we found all six sets of dog tags. How did all the dog tags get into the pocket of the fourth man? Did that man assume he might survive the forced march and planned to contact the next of kin of the other five POW’s or were the dog tags placed in his pocket by Germans?”
