From their heavy winter clothes, we assumed they had been taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive. As we were disinterring the POW’s bodies, I spoke with an old German caretaker who casually mentioned that when the men were brought to the cemetery, five were dead and one dying–a scene difficult to imagine.
